Last times this happened (on the same day) it was 2 really small patches, but the games were on SSD, and there was only about 10GB left on it, so it couldn't possibly have copied stuff elsewhere (unless it did? ) It's always pre-allocated but it now can take an age to do it, to the point where I think it's locked up There's a 79.3 MB updated to CoH2 this morning and it's been pre-allocating for about 5 minutes now. Oh, yeah, that explains most of this i suppose, but i have the suspicion something else is going on as well. For SOME games, Steam takes an age to pre-allocate space before updating or installing.
STEAM DOWNLOAD PREALLOCATING UPDATE
It's really boring and I don't know how can a 3mb update take 5 hours instead of 5. so you temporarily need 100GB free and it will take long, ages if you're on an HDD. I've done the 2.1gb update today now I have to go for the 3mb update but steam preallocation is taking 3 hours till now and it's not finished yet I estimate it will take 1 or 2 more hours till it finishes preallocating. See my post above, on a 100GB game even if the patch is 50MB it will copy the entire 100GB to a different location on the drive while applying the patch, then delete the original data.
